Upgrading to Windows 11

Issue/Question

My computer is telling me it is ready for Windows 11 but not getting the update

I need to upgrade to windows 11

Environment

• Windows 10
• Windows 11
• PC

Cause

Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025

Some new software may require first upgrading to Windows 11

Resolution

Note: Your system must meet the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11
Note: TPM 2.0 is required to run Windows 11 and may need to be enabled in your system's BIOS. Consult your PC manufacturer's support information on how to enable TPM 2.0
Note: To Enable TPM on Lenovo laptops purchased through the University, follow Enabling TPM on a USD purchased Laptop ​​​

Upgrading

1. Click  Start
2. Click  Settings
3. Click  Update & Security
4. If the Upgrade to Windows box is displayed click Download and install, otherwise click Check for Updates
   Note: If the option to upgrade to Windows 11 is not available, click Check online for updates from Microsoft Update or proceed to the next step
5. Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant
   Note: If your device is not running a version of Windows 10 that meets the requirements to upgrade, follow Updating In Place Windows to Current Version
6. Open the downloaded file Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe
7. Click Accept and install
8. Windows will begin the upgrade and restart when completed
9. Check for Windows Updates
   1. Click  Start
   2. Click  Settings
   3. Click  Windows Update
   4. Click Check for updates

Downgrading

1. If you experience any issues after upgrading you can Downgrade back to Windows 10 within 10 days of the upgrade
2. Click  Start
3. Click  Settings
4. Click System
5. Click Recovery
6. Click Go Back
7. Check  most suitable reason
8. Click Next
9. Click No, thanks
10. Click Next
11. Click Next
12. Click Go back to Windows 10
13. Your computer will now restart and begin the process of rolling back to Windows 10
