Answer

What is ReadSpeaker?

ReadSpeaker is an online based tool that is embedded into the D2L Brightspace environment so you can listen to course Content, Assignment, Quizzes, Discussion Topics and Threads and Files.

Can I Disable ReadSpeaker?

ReadSpeaker can be disabled on a course. For information on how to do this please contact the Digital Accessibility Team or the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Where is ReadSpeaker?

You can find the ReadSpeaker listen button above the course Content, Assignments, Discussions Topics and Threads and on each Quiz question. Click Listen to hear the page read to you.

How does ReadSpeaker Work?

You can follow along with the synchronized highlighted writing to improve comprehension and retention of materials.

With the ReadSpeaker player, you can set your individual preferences, highlighting colors, automatic scrolling, reading speed, text settings, font size, font, and text colors. To locate this, when you have ReadSpeaker reading text, click the 3 bars to the left of the menu. Then select Settings.

The ReadSpeaker player will also allow you to change the voice of the narrator. Click the 3 bars to the left of the menu, then click Reading Voice.

When you hover over a highlighted word, a pop up menu will appear that allows you to Translate the phrase into another language. Once you select Translate, you will then be able to select the new language you would like. The words will be read to you in the new language.

You will also have the ability to look up words in the dictionary from ReadSpeaker. When a word is highlighted and you hover over it, a pop-up menu will appear. Then you can select Dictionary and a menu will appear with definitions and parts of speech.

ReadSpeaker dictionary and translation features are disabled for D2L quizzes.
