USD is committed to helping students, faculty and staff protect themselves online from serious threats such as losing a paycheck, a financial aid refund or even your own identity. To protect the campus from Phishing and other malicious activities, the University added Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) as a two-factor authentication solution into the existing IT infrastructure.
The factors may include:
- Something you know: A unique username and password
- Something you have: A smartphone with an app to approve authentication requests
- Something you are: Biometrics – such as your fingerprint or a retina scan
Many of our common web-based services will utilize Duo and require a second-factor to sign-in, including but not limited to:
- Office 365 email and collaboration tools
- Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client
- Remote Access
Benefits
- MFA protects your account and your data. Two-factor authentication is the single most effective tool for combatting Phishing attacks. It provides a second layer of security to any type of login. By requiring two different channels of authentication, the University protects students, faculty, and staff from attackers that exploit stolen usernames and passwords to steal your data.
- MFA protects all Coyotes. Privileged accounts have access to protected University data. MFA improves security and decreases the risk of a data breach at the University.
- MFA offers choices. Students, faculty, and staff can use the Duo mobile app for Push or Passcode authentication, or a security key that resembles a USB flash drive. Some University applications can remember your device for 30 days, so that a trusted device does not require a second factor every time you open a browser.

Cost
There is no cost to use the Duo app as the second factor of authentication.
A physical security key or a hardware token can also be utilized if the Duo app is not possible for you. Keys and tokens are available from the Service Desk at ID Weeks room 104 for $20.
