Embed or link an Excel workbook in Word

Question

How do I embed or link to an Excel workbook in a Word document?

Answer

  1. Place your mouse insertion point in the Word document where you want the workbook to be inserted
  2. Open the Excel worksheet that contains the data that you want to create a linked object or embedded object from
  3. While in Excel, select the entire worksheet, or the range of cells, or the chart that you want
  4. Copy this information (CTRL + C)
  5. In the Word document, click your insertion point to where you want the information you just copied to appear
  6. On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group
  7. Click the arrow under Paste
  8. Now, follow the directions for either embedding or linking.
    • LINKING
      • Click on either the Link and Keep Source Formatting or Link and Keep Destination Formatting (the two command icons with pictures of a chain link on them)
      • The Link and Keep Source Formatting command will allow you to keep the formatting of the source Excel file, while the Link and Keep Destination Formatting command will keep the formatting of the Word document
    • EMBEDDING
      • Click Paste special.
      • The Paste Special dialog box will appear.
      • In the As list, make sure Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object is selected
      • Click OK
