Overview
The University of South Dakota offers two distinct services for name changes: submitting a legal name change and submitting a preferred name change. These services are designed to ensure that all students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to be recognized by their chosen names in university records and communications.
Step 1: Submit a request to change your legal or preferred name.
Step 2: Once approved, submit a request to the Service Desk to update your email address.

Benefits
- Legal Name Change: Ensures that all official records, including transcripts, diplomas, and identification cards, reflect the individual's legal name.
- Preferred Name Change: Allows individuals to be addressed by their chosen name in non-legal contexts, such as class rosters, email display name, and campus directories.
- Email Address Change: Update your email address and username to match your legal or preferred name
Target Completion Date
- Legal Name Change: Typically processed within 10-15 business days from the receipt of all required documentation.
- Preferred Name Change: Generally processed within 3-5 business days.
- Email Address Change: Timing coordinated with you and ITS as you will use your new email address for login once changed.
Available To
Available to all current students, faculty, and staff members at the University of South Dakota.
Cost
There is no cost associated with either the legal name change or the preferred name change services.
