Overview
The University of South Dakota offers a comprehensive Legal Name Change Service designed to ensure that all official university records reflect the accurate legal name of students, faculty, and staff. This service is essential for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of records that are used for various administrative and legal purposes within the university.
Student Legal Name shall be used for:
- University ID Cards
- Class Rosters and Grade Reports accessed through Banner Admin
- Financial Aid
- SEVIS
- Responses to enrollment inquiries such as verification requests (unless a Request to Withhold Directory Information is in place)
- Transcripts and Degree Verification, including National Student Clearinghouse
- Records from the Registrar’s Office and all licensure records
Faculty and staff Legal Name shall be used for:
- University ID Cards
- SEVIS
- Payroll
- IRS

10-15 business days from the date of submission of all required documentation
Available To
The Legal Name Change Service is available to all current students, faculty, and staff of the University of South Dakota.
Cost
There is no cost associated with the Legal Name Change Service.
