Preferred Name Change

Overview

The Preferred Name Change service allows students, faculty, and staff at South Dakota Board of Regents institutions to use a name other than their legal name in various university systems and platforms.

Student Preferred Name shall be used for the following instances:

  • Assigned email address
  • Class Rosters and Grade Reports accessed through Self-Service/SNAP
  • Dean’s List and Academic Recognition
  • Institutional Early Alert Tools and student success platforms
  • Housing Roster/Assignment
  • Directory Listing
  • D2L

Faculty and staff Preferred Name shall be used for:

  • Assigned email address
  • Class rosters and IDEA forms
  • Website and catalog listings
  • Directory listings
  • D2L
Benefits

Allows individuals to be addressed by their chosen name in non-legal contexts, such as class rosters, email addresses, and campus directories.

Target Completion Date

Preferred name changes are typically processed within 3-5 business days after submission.

Available To

All students, faculty, and staff at South Dakota Board of Regents institutions.

Cost

There is no cost associated with submitting a preferred name change request.
