Adobe will not open files and is requesting Adobe Reader 8 or higher

Issue/Question

User receives the following error when attempting to open a PDF from the internet: "The document you are trying to load requires Adobe Reader 8 or higher. You may not have the Adobe Reader installed or your viewing environment may not be properly configured to use Adobe Reader.

Environment

  • Chrome
  • Edge
  • Adobe Reader
  • Windows 10

Cause

Browser needs updating

Resolution

  1. Go to Adobe Reader to install the latest version
  2. Download file and open it with Adobe Acrobat
  3. If it cannot be downloaded
    1. Follow this link to update Firefox Firefox Update
    2. Follow this link to update Chrome Chrome update
    3. Follow this link to update Edge Edge Update
  4. Try opening file after updating
