Password Requirements and Best Practices

Question

What are the requirements for setting my password?

Do you have any guidance for setting my password?

Answer

The following requirements have been put in place to help you in creating a strong secure password:

  • Minimum length of 8 characters
  • Must not be one of your previous 10 passwords
  • Must meet 3 of the following:
    • Minimum 1 lowercase letter
    • Minimum 1 number
    • Minimum 1 special character
    • Minimum 1 uppercase letter
Note: as you meet each requirement on your password the line will turn from red to green
Note:  Do not use part of your name or username in your password

Best practices on setting and using your password:

  • Use a unique password for each of your online accounts
  • Don’t share a password with anyone. Not even a friend or family member
  • Set a password easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Consider using a memorable phrase like "6MonkeysRLooking^"
  • If you don’t want to memorize multiple passwords, consider using a password manager
  • Change passwords immediately on accounts you suspect may have been compromised
  • Don't use dictionary words
