McKusick Evacuation and Severe Weather Plan

Question

  • What is my building's evacuation plan?
  • What is the severe weather plan for McKusick?

Answer

Evacuation Plan

In the event that the McKusick Technology Center (McKusick) must be evacuated, the following procedures shall be followed.

  1. Upon activation of the fire alarm, all persons within the McKusick will immediately begin exiting the building through the nearest available exit route
    1. Elevators should NOT be used during an evacuation event unless necessary for the evacuation of a disabled/handicapped person.
    2. Prior to leaving the room, any open flames, hot plates, coffee pots, or similar equipment should be turned off.
    3. Electrical equipment that cannot be left unattended for prolonged periods should also be turned off prior to exiting the room.
  1. Designated staff from each floor will quickly survey the floor to assure that evacuation is in progress or completed.  The following staff have been designated:
  • First Floor – Kathy Rosener
  • Second Floor CSD Space – Dylan Klimisch
  • Second Floor Esports Space, after 5PM, or Weekends – Esports Attendant
  1. All persons within McKusick will convene on the south side of Old Main building.  This will allow quick assessment for any missing persons and avoid interference with the emergency responders.
  2. In the event of weather conditions where shelter is desired, please move away from the Old Main building and go inside Aalfs Auditorium/Slagle Hall for comfort and safety.
Note:  If Aalfs/Slagle is locked, please call UPD at 605-677-5342. Any individual needing assistance to evacuate should be placed on the Northeast Landing in the stairwell or in the landing outside of esports in the area of refuge.

Severe Weather Plan

In the event of severe weather alerts such as tornado or severe thunderstorm, persons within the McKusick should immediately proceed to the Lower Level of the Arts and Sciences building using the fastest route available.  In the event that the Lower Level is not available or cannot be reached safely, persons within the McKusick should immediately proceed to the first floor and find any windowless, centrally located rooms to enter (e.g. inside the hearing test booths in 111 and 112).

  1. Designated staff from each floor will quickly survey the floor to assure that evacuation is in progress or has been completed.  The following staff have been designated:
  • First Floor – Kathy Rosener
  • Second Floor CSD Space – Dylan Klimisch
  • Second Floor Esports Space, after 5PM, or Weekends – Esports Attendant

Arts & Sciences and McKusick Technology Center are supervised by the same fire alarm panel, therefore, this plan should be activated if Arts & Sciences is evacuated.
