Bitlocker Recovery Using Microsoft Account

Issue/Question

Bitlocker is prompting for a recovery key when starting computer

Environment

  • Windows
  • BitLocker
  • Microsoft Account

Cause

A change in the BIOS can prompt BitLocker to request a recovery key

Resolution

  1. The BitLocker recovery key can be found by going to Microsoft's recovery key site and logging in with the Microsoft account tied to this device
    1. Log into the site above
    2. There may be one or more devices or keys listed, but choose the desired device, and start with the most recent key
      Note: It will be listed under Recovery Key and is a 48-digit key
  2. If you do not have a Microsoft account tied to this device, the device may need to be imaged
