Ally Course Accessibility Report in D2L

Issue/Question

Not sure about how to identify and correct accessibility issues with your course content?

Environment

  • BlackBoard Ally
  • D2L Brightspace

Cause

Blackboard Ally's course accessibility report acts as a complement to the existing accessibility indicators.   It provides an accessibility summary and overview at the course level to make it easy to find and prioritize issues.

Resolution

  1. Log into D2L 
  2. Click your course
  3. Click Resources on the red navigation bar
  4. Click Ally Course Report
  5. Course Accessibility score is located in the top left
    1. Checked against key areas of the internal accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA)
    2. Scores range from Low to Perfect,  The higher the score the fewer the issues
      • Low: File is not accessible and needs immediate attention
      • Medium: File is somewhat accessible and could use improvement
      • High: File is accessible but could be improved
      • Perfect: File is accessible, No improvement needed
  6. Overview Tab- Use the report to help you decide what to fix first
    1. For example, View content with most severe issues first or start with content that's easiest to fix
    2. View breakdown of the content and files
      1. Graph and list of all course content 
        • PDF files
        • Microsoft® Word files
        • Microsoft® PowerPoint® files
        • OpenOffice/LibreOffice files
        • Uploaded HTML files
        • Image files (JPG, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF)
      2. Content with the easiest issues to fix 
        1. Click Start to see a list of content with the easiest issues to address
      3. Fix Low scoring content
        1. Click Start to see a list of the lowest scoring items in your course
      4.  Below Remaining issues
        1. You can focus on specific issues or the most severe issues first, Select an issue to see all the pieces of content that have that issue
          • Severe - issues are the greatest risk to accessibility and require the most attention
          • Major - issues impact accessibility, and while not severe, require attention
          • Minor - issues should be considered for a better accessibility score
  7. Click the Content Tab to
    1. View a list of course files by accessibility score or number of issues
    2. Launch feedback directly from this report and work to improve the document

These steps will improve the accessibility score for your course
