Setting Jabber Softphone Audio

Issue/Question

How can I set Jabber Softphone audio to my computer to work from home?

Environment

  • Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
  • Cisco Jabber
  • Video Conferencing
  • Softphone
  • Working Remotely

Cause

Using the softphone feature allows you to easily place, receive, and manage telephone calls using your computer

Resolution

Choose Your Audio Device

  1. Open Jabber
    • Windows:
      • Click 
      • Click  Settings
      • Click Audio
    • Mac:
      • Click Jabber 
      • Click Preferences 
      • Click Audio/Video
  2. Ringer/Alerts 
    1. Click
    2. Click Computer speakers, headset or speakerphone
  3. Speaker
    1. Click
    2. Click Computer speakers, headset or speakerphone
  4. Microphone
    1. Click
    2. Click Computer microphone, headset or speakerphone
  5. Select Keep using the current microphone or speaker
    Note: If you do not see this option, follow Requesting Cisco Jabber step 1 for Windows or step 2 for Mac
  6. Click OK
     

Set Computer to receive your calls

  1. Click Call Settings  or 
    Note: This is In the lower-left corner
  2. Set Device for calls to Use my Computer
     

Answer Incoming Call

  1. When you have an incoming call, a notification window appears
  2. In the notification window, click Answer
     

Set your video preference for calls

  1. The default setting is to always start calls with video but you can turn this off
    1. Click 
    2. Click  Settings
    3. Click Calls
    4. Never start calls with video

Something to consider before getting started

  1. The audio quality of a softphone connection — both what you hear and what the other person hears — is impacted by the microphone and speakers you are using
  2. While most modern computers come with built-in microphones and speakers, you might want to invest in a high-quality headset to improve the audio quality
  3. A headset can also reduce surrounding noise and increase privacy​​​
Open work environment
  1. In an open work environment, it is important to have
    1. Active noise cancellation
    2. Passive noise cancellation
    3. Wired headset to avoid having to charge the headset and to avoid running into potential interference in heavily Bluetooth saturated area
  2. Recommended Headsets
    • ​​​​Jabra Evolve 80 UC -Active and passive noise cancellation, and USB wired headset
    • Logitech USB Wired Headset H390 -USB wired headset (does not include active and passive noise cancellation)
Closed work environment
  1. In a closed work environment, consider a headset with
    1.  Active noise cancellation
    2. Optional passive noise cancellation
    3. Wired or wireless headset
  2. Recommended Headsets
    • Jabra Evolve 80 UC - Active and passive noise cancellation, and USB wired headset
    • Jabra Evolve 75 UC -Active and passive noise cancellation, and wireless headset
    • Logitech H820e Wireless Dual Headset - Wireless headset (does not include active and passive noise cancellation)
