What Remote Access Tool is Right for me?

USD has a lot of remote connection tools, which one is right for me?
What is the difference between Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)?
Why do we have so many different Remote Access tools?

Environment

  • Working from Home
  • Need Access to USD Campus Resources

Resolution

Virtual Private Network (VPN):
  • Great if you are using a USD owned laptop
  • Require access to a resource that can only be accessed from USD network 
    • Banner Admin functions (HR, Finance, Student)
    • Department File Shares (X drive)
    • Remote Desktop Connection (RDP)
Windows Virtual Desktop:
  • Great if you are using a personally owned computer
  • Only available for USD Faculty and Staff
  • User Based settings are saved session after session
  • Office 365 Products & OneDrive
  • Network File Shares
  • Access to local printers
