Issue/Question

How can I connect to Windows Virtual Desktop?

How do I access Department Network File shares from Off campus?

Environment

  • Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)
  • Working from Off-Campus
  • Remote Desktop
  • USD Faculty
  • USD Staff

Cause

This solution provides:

  • User Based settings are saved session after session
  • Office 365 Products & OneDrive
  • Network File Shares
  • Access to on-prem resources
  • Access to local printers
  • ADFS with Duo is used for authentication

Resolution

  • Note: This is only available for USD Faculty and Staff
  • Note: The first time you access an Office product you will need to Activate Office
  • Note: We recommend not saving files in WVD.  Please sign in and save to OneDrive

Request access to WVD

  1.  Please contact the Service Desk with the following information: 
    1. First and Last Names 
    2. USD Username or email address

How to access once Permissions have been setup 

Note: The first time you access WVD it will take a few minutes to setup

Browser-Based: (connect using your Internet browser)
Note:
The Browser-Based client lets you access your Windows Virtual Desktop resources from a web browser without the download and  installation process

  1. Browse to https://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/arm/webclient/index.html preferably in Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer
  2. Type your USD email address or Pick an account - Click your USD email address
  3. Click Virtual Computer 
  4. On the Access local resources pop-up 
    Clipboard
     Printer
  5. Click Allow
  6. Enter your credentials
    • USD username 
    • Password
  7. Click Submit
  8. On USD Login Policy Click Ok
     

Windows

Download Windows Client - Remote Desktop

  1. Browse to http://aka.ms/wvd/clients/windows
  2. Run the Remote Desktop installer once it is downloaded
  3. Click Next- Welcome to the Remote Setup
  4. I accept the terms 
  5. Click Next
  6. Select one:
    Install just for you
    Install for all users of this machine (recommended for USD owned computers)
  7. Click Install
  8. Click Finish

Opening Windows Remote Desktop

  1. Click 
  2. Type Remote Desktop
    Note:
    Right click Remote Desktop select pin to start or pin to taskbar
  3. Click Remote Desktop
  4. Click Subscribe
  5. Type your USD email address or Pick an account - Click your USD email address
  6. Click Next
  7. Click Work or school account
  8. Type your USD email address and password
  9. Click Sign in
    Note: Complete Multifactor Authentication if prompted
  10. Click USD-WVD 
  11. Enter your USD password

MAC

Download macOS client

  1. Browse to iTunes Store
  2. Open Microsoft Remote Desktop
  3. Click Workspaces tab
  4. Click Add Workspace
  5. Enter https://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com It will search for workspaces linked to this URL and you should see these results
  6. Click Add
  7. In the window that appears, enter your USD email address
  8. Click Next
  9. Enter your password
  10. Click Sign In​​​​​​​

Opening Windows Remote Desktop

  1. Open Microsoft Remove Desktop application
  2. Double click the host icon
  3. Type your USD email address or Pick an account - Click your USD email address
  4. Click Next
  5. Click Work or school account
  6. Type your USD email address and password
  7. Click Sign in
    Note: Complete Multifactor Authentication if prompted
  8. Click USD-WVD 
  9. Enter your USD password

Once Connected to Windows Remote Desktop

To Access Department Network File Share
  1. Click 
  2. Type File Explorer
  3. Click File Explorer
  4. From the left Column Click This PC
  5. Your Department Network Files are listed Below Network Locations 
To Access Banner 
Note: 
You can access it directly  https://appnav.sdbor.edu/applicationNavigator/
  1. Click 
  2. Type Internet Explorer 
  3. Click Internet Explorer
  4. Browse to  SNAP 
  5. In the Black Menu bar on the left Click HR
  6. Click Banner PROD Application Navigator below Banner INB General Menu
  7. Add Components for Xtender
