Excel or Word file is Locked for Editing

Issue/Question

I tried to open a file and I receive the following error message

I can open a word document, but the document is locked and will not allow me to make any changes.

Error: Document.xlsx is locked for editing by 'another user'. Open 'Read-Only' or click 'Notify' to open read-only and receive notification when the document is no longer in use.

Environment

• Microsoft Excel
• Microsoft Word

Cause

File is pinned to the Start Menu, closed incorrectly, or in use by another user

Resolution

• If pinned to taskbar unpin the document
• Follow suggestions in Excel file is locked for editing 
• Make and use a copy of the file
• If no one is using the file, recover a previous version
