- Dakota Hall and East Hall are supervised by the same fire alarm system, but will not activate together. However, if the alarm activates in either building, occupants should strongly consider activating the alarm for both buildings depending on the circumstances.
Evacuation Plan
- In the event that Dakota Hall must be evacuated, the following procedures shall be followed.
- Upon activation of the fire alarm, all persons within Dakota Hall will immediately begin exiting through the nearest available exit route.
- Designated staff from each floor will quickly survey the floor to assure that evacuation is in progress. The following staff have been designated:
- 1st Floor - Eric Jepsen, Chair, Political Science
- Student Counseling Center – Debra Robertson, Director
- 2nd Floor - Darlene Farabee, Chair, English Department
- 3rd Floor - Leah Seurer, Chair, Communication Studies, and/or Rob Turner, Chair, Modern Languages & Linguistics
- All persons within the Dakota Hall Building will assemble on the South side of Old Main. This will allow quick assessment for any missing persons and avoid interference with emergency responders. In the event of weather conditions where shelter is desired, please go inside Aalfs Auditorium for comfort and safety.
- All persons are asked to remain in the safe area until released by UPD.
Severe Weather Plan
In the event of severe weather alerts such as tornado or severe thunderstorm, persons within the Dakota Hall Building should immediately proceed to the basement or safe area. If that area cannot be reached, proceed to inner windowless rooms or central hallway of the building using the fastest route available.
- Designated staff from each floor will quickly survey the floor to assure that evacuation is in progress or has been completed. The following staff have been designated:

- The lower level main hallway near the doorways to adjoining buildings is the safe area and should be large enough to accommodate all building occupants.
- Avoid areas with windows during severe weather.
- All persons are asked to remain in the safe area until released.
