Recycling Assistance

Overview

Help make USD greener by using the recycling team to assist with your recycling needs on campus..

Click the Request Recycling button on this page to receive assistance with your recycling needs for intra-campus moves, and other times you have a large quantities to recycle.  You may also use the button to ask a question about recycling or report an overflowing bin.

Below is a list of acceptable recyclable materials with preparation required before pickup.

  • Shredded paper: Gather already-shredded paper in clear plastic bag(s) Please Note: We do not shred paper for you
  • Cardboard: Remove packaging materials*, flatten boxes
  • Office paper, cardstock, manilla folders, junk mail, newspaper, magazines, glossy paper, brown paper bags (NO paper towels or tissues): Remove non-paper materials (metal clips, plastic bindings, metal spirals, plastic sleeves, laminated paper, etc). Small staples and paper clips are OKAY. Plastic windows in envelopes are OKAY.
  • Paper cups: Empty, rinse
  • Paperback books & journals**: Remove non-paper materials (e.g. shrink wrap)
  • Hardcover books**: Remove non-paper materials (e.g. plastic bookmarks)
  • Glass bottles and jars: Empty, rinse, attach metal lids that screw on, contain loose lids them in a metal can like a soup can and crimp the top to trap them inside
  • Metal cans, clean aluminum pans and foil: Empty, rinse, ball foil
  • Cartons: Empty, rinse, landfill lids
  • Plastic bottles, tubs, and jugs (NO plastic bags or anything not a bottle, tub, or jug): Empty, rinse, attach lids

List of items that cannot be recycled through this service.

  • Used printer cartridges: bring to Postal Services at the Center for Continuing Education for recycling
  • Broken campus-owned electronics: submit ITS service request 
  • Chemicals: call Environmental Health & Safety at: 605-677-6265

Note:  

  • Consider bringing air pillows and plastic bags to the plastic film recycling bins at Hy-Vee or Walmart. More info at PlasticFilm Recycling
  • Please consider donating desirable books to the Vermillion Public Library or Civic Council
