Issue/Question

How do I find an Internship

Environment

  • Student
  • Center for Career Design
  • Job & Career Preparation
  • Career Resources

Resolution

  1. The underlying goal of an internship program should be to help interns develop necessary skills and competencies that will give them a strong professional presence in the workplace
  2. When applying for internships, students must be able to answer the following questions:

  • Are you looking for a paid opportunity or are you just looking for any experience?
  • What do you hope to get out of an internship?
  • Do you know what will be asked of you?
  • What set of skills/competencies do you hope to work on with an internship (NACE competencies: Career & Self-Development, Communication, Critical Thinking, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork, Technology)?
  • What are the benefits?
  • What resources are provided for you by the internship?
  • Short-term Goals? Long-term goals?
