Answer

  1. To apply for a university sponsored program exemption, you first need to go to the University Housing Portal
  2. Click the Exemption Request button
  3. Find the appropriate term and click Continue
  4. Review your information and update as necessary. When finished, click Save & Continue
  5. Find the dropdown box labelled Exemption Type Requested and select University Sponsored Program
  6. Read the terms and conditions outlined in the agreement
  7. Sign in agreement by typing your first and last name
    • Note: Students must type their name exactly as it appears in the housing portal, with no extra spaces or punctuation
  8. Click Save & Continue
  9. The next page has a spot in which you may upload any supporting documentation. This is not required for a university sponsored program exemption
    • Note: At this point, the exemption request is not complete and therefore will not be processed until this is submitted
  10. Click Submit Exemption Application
  11. You should arrive at a page labelled Exemption Application Status. You can now click Exit Application
  12. The options for eligibility are as follows:
    • study abroad
    • internship off campus
    • online classes only
    • Note: For university sponsored program exemptions, approval is needed for each fall and spring term within the two (2) year live-on requirement
  13. University Sponsored Program exemptions are granted based on the following criteria:
    • Registered for less than 6 credit hours on USD’s main campus
    • You must be registered for your program and/or your class roster updated prior to submitting this request
    • Request must be submitted by the add/drop date (Census date) of each semester to be considered for exemption
    • Requires written communication from a USD faculty/staff member including the type of program and duration (semester or academic year)
      • Note: It is the your responsibility as the requesting student to make sure that the requested information has been sent to the University Housing Office within 2 weeks of submitting this exemption application
  14. There is no way for University Housing to quantify how likely it is that an exemption will get approved. The approval or denial of a housing exemption is solely based on the requirements outlined for each exemption and the university's ability to accommodate students' needs
    • Note: University Housing recommends that students do not sign an off-campus lease until their exemption is approved
