Numbering the Cells in a Word Table

Question

How do I number the cells in a table in Word?

Answer

  • Select the table cells that you wish to number.
  • To number the beginning of each row, select only the first column in the table.
  • On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Numbering.
    • To select a different number format, right-click a number in the list, point to Numbering, click Define New Number Format, and then select the options that you want.
    • If a table cell contains multiple lines of text, Microsoft Office Word 2016 numbers each line in the cell. It will also number adjacent columns before moving to the next row.
