What are some of the scholarships available specifically for students in the College of Arts & Sciences? 

Answer

  • John W. Carlson Research Grant
    • This grant will be used to support research by students in the College of Arts & Sciences.
    • Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply.
    • Candidates must be nominated by a faculty member who will write a reference letter that addresses the student's competence and research abilities.
    • Along with filling out the biographical information in this form, please upload the following required documents:
      • Description of your research project
      • Current transcript
      • Proposed budget for the grant award
      • Nomination letter from a faculty member (This letter can be uploaded to the form OR emailed to as@usd.edu.)
    • Completed applications are due on Friday, March 8th by 11:59 pm.

  • Marx Servant Leader Award
    • The recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences and must have an understanding of the obligations we have as citizens of our local communities and a sense of our responsibilities as citizens of the world and custodians of the planet.
    • Please address those criteria in your responses (of no more than six to ten lines, each) to the following questions:
      • What service have you performed, or are currently performing, that demonstrates a foundation for future service activity?
      • What have you learned about service and yourself from what you have been involved in already?
      • How have you demonstrated good citizenship?
      • What do you consider some of the obligations of citizenship you will have in the local community or communities where you live?
      • What line of work would you like to pursue, or what professional contribution would you like to make during your lifetime?
      • Wherever you physically live and work, what responsibilities do you believe you have as a citizen of the world and a custodian of the planet?
      • Briefly, why is corporate citizenship and social responsibility important for any organization?
      • Please indicate what you consider your level of need for the scholarship.
    • Please submit a nomination letter from a faculty member who can speak to the service you have performed. Faculty members may instead email this nomination letter to as@usd.edu.
    • Applications should be submitted via the electronic form by 11:59 pm on Friday, March 8th.
    • If you have questions about the application process, please email as@usd.edu.
       
  • Dean Joseph H. Cash Award for Excellence in Writing
    • Undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences are eligible for this award which strives to acknowledge excellence in writing.
    • Faculty members may nominate students through a nomination form and include the student's paper.
      Note: Faculty have received a link to the nomination form, but can also download the copy attached to this article.
    • If Arts & Sciences students have a paper they did really well on, they are encouraged to speak with their professor about getting nominated for this award. 
    • Completed applications are due on Friday, March 8th by 11:59 pm.
