Cannot Open a .wps File

How do you open or convert a .wps file to be viewed in Word?

Environment

  • Microsoft Word
  • LibreOffice

Cause

Microsoft Works .wps files cannot be opened in Microsoft Word without first being converted to .docx

Resolution

Install LibreOffice to open and convert the file with LibreOffice Writer

  1. Download the Installer
  2. Click to open the Installer
  3. Click Next
  4. Click Next
  5. Click Install

Note: This may require a reboot

  1. Click OK
  2. Click Finish
  3. Click Yes
  4. Double-Click the LibreOffice shortcut on the Desktop
  5. Click Open File
  6. Select the .wps file
  7. Click Open
  8. Click File
  9. Click Save As
  10. Select Word 2007-365 (*.docx)
  11. Click Save
  12. Click Use Word 2007-365 Format
  13. The file can now be viewed and edited in Microsoft Word
