Career by Design Newsletter - Fall 2026 #1

Answer

As we are preparing for the Fall 2026 semester, we wanted to send a few reminders and important dates to add to your course schedules ahead of time.

UPCOMING CAREER EVENTS

All events are posted in Coyote Careers,

Campus Groups (formerly USD Involved), and the USD Campus Calendar (25Live).

CAREER DESIGN CAMP

  • Tuesday, August 18–Wednesday, August 19, 2026 – 9am-4pm – Center for Career Design MUC 101
    • The Center for Career Design will be hosting a two-day Career Design Camp for USD students before the Fall 2026 semester. Students will learn to apply design thinking to their career planning and preparation - it's effective and confidence building and a bit playful! Career readiness is more than a major, and Career Camp will help them not only identify the path they want to pursue, but also new ways to leverage their skills and experiences so they stand out when they are applying for jobs, graduate school, etc.
    • Please share with your student network and/or send recommendations for students we can invite. USD students need to apply in Coyote Careers by August 1st. Limit 25 students. Qualifications: undergraduate students who have graduated from a rural high school OR up to 10 students who are pursuing a humanities degree.

SERVICES & RESOURCES

The Center for Career Design offers support for students who are exploring majors and careers, refining job search documents, navigating job/internship searches, preparing for interviews, applying to graduate school, attending career events, utilizing Coyote Careers, and working on their career and life design.

COYOTE CAREERS

Coyote Careers is USD’s career services management software. It features jobs of all kinds – on-campus, local, nationwide, part-time, full-time, etc. Students can customize searches, upload resumes, store portfolio documents and multiple versions of resumes, apply for jobs and so much more. It is pretty intuitive, but to fully understand the platform, students can visit the CCD website, attend a training, or schedule a meeting with a Career Coach.

Where can students access Coyote Careers?

  • myUSD portal (the red JOBS button), CCD website or Coyote OneStop
  • Download the app: search in an app store for Symplicity Jobs and Careers. After the app is downloaded, students choose University of South Dakota from the school list (it is only necessary to choose the school during set up). A correctly loaded app is branded Coyote Careers.

CAREER COACHING APPOINTMENTS

Career coaching meets the student where they are at and focuses on solutions, insight and action Coaches are prepared to help with all manner of career topics: from very specific resume advice to open-ended questions about where to start (or re-start) identifying a career path.

How to schedule an appointment

  • All students can schedule career coaching appointments (in-person or virtual) through Coyote Connections: choose Career Planning from the list of care centers (or call or email the CCD).

CHARLIE’S CAREER CLOSET

Open on Mondays & Thursdays from 2-5pm located at the Burr House. All USD students can receive 10 free business casual items per semester.

  • If you are interested in donating your professional clothing items to Charlie’s Career Closet, there is a storage box located on the front porch of the Burr House that you can drop off your items any time.

COYOTE READY

Intangibly, Coyote Ready is a shared career ethos where every member of our community plays a vital role in nurturing students’ readiness for their career and life. Practically, Coyote Ready is a design framework for helping students recognize and articulate the competencies they build through everyday experiences, classroom lessons, interpersonal interactions, campus activities and work. Ultimately, the goal is to empower them to be the primary architects and narrators of their own career readiness.

The goal is for Coyote Ready to become a collective commitment, woven into the fabric of our institution and resulting in students who are better prepared to express the outcomes of their USD experience and to efficiently find meaningful employment or additional education upon graduation. Attached are the USD Coyote Ready Competencies.
