Academic Document Remediation

Overview

If you distribute digital content (e.g., emails, documents, videos, etc.) to students via any method (e.g., D2L, email, personal website, etc.), the content must be made accessible before being posted or shared.

Please click the Academic Document Remediation Request button on this page to request remediation of a single document. To request a review of your entire course, please request an Accessibility Consultation from the CTL.

NOTE: The CTL is happy to answer questions about copyrighted material but cannot remediate content protected by copyright law. Please reach out to your library liaison for assistance with copyrighted journal articles and books. For other forms of copyrighted content, please refer to the content creator.

GRADUATE STUDENTS: The CTL will only remediate theses and dissertations received via the Graduate School, not the student.

If you are looking for remediation support for content not related to course content (e.g., website documents, handbooks, accreditation documents, etc.) please refer to the Non-Academic Document Remediation service.

Benefits

Distributing digital content that is accessible helps ensure they will work with assistive technology, such as Panorama or screen readers, allowing students to perceive content in whatever method is best for their learning. While many students require the use of assistive technology, making digital content accessible benefits all students. A document or application is considered accessible if it meets certain technical criteria and can be perceived accurately and thoroughly with various forms of assistive technology.

For content originating from the instructor or staff member in a document creation software such as Microsoft Word or Powerpoint, it is easier to make adjustments to the document in the native document creator. Panorama can also be used in a limited capacity to make digital content accessible. The Center for Teaching and Learning offers workshops on making content accessible for these cases as well as more advanced PDF workshops. Please review the CTL Calendar for upcoming workshops or work through the asynchronous training modules in D2L (please email ctl@usd.edu if you do not already have access). If you would like to request a workshop for your department, please contact ctl@usd.edu.
