Overview
The Office of Accessibility can provide sign language interpreters to students registered with the Office of Accessibility and visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Benefits
A sign language interpreter and real-time captioning bridge the communication gap between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and those who do not use sign language. This ensures that all parties can fully understand and participate in conversations.
Target Completion Date
ASL interpreting and caption requests should be made at least 48 hours before the event or class for which the interpreting is needed.
Available To
ASL interpreter services and real-time captioning are available to students registered with the Office of Accessibility who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Office of Accessibility also works with departments on campus to provide sign language interpreters for programs, activities, events, or for campus visitors requiring sign language interpreters.
Cost
There is no cost for ASL services for students registered with the Office of Accessibility nor for visitors requiring sign language interpreters to access university programs and activities. For special events, the charge for ASL interpreters is typically $55-$65/hour. Interpreter services are billed for travel as well as interpreting time, and some interpreters also charge for mileage. Whenever possible, interpreting services should be obtained from the closest source. The cost for real-time captioning services is approximately $80/hour through Verbit AI.
Policies
If needed for a period exceeding 90 minutes, two interpreters are needed due to physical demands of signing. Additional information on code of conduct for both students and sign language interpreters is available from the Office of Accessibility and should be reviewed by both parties.
