Fixing WDF_Violation error

Resolve Automatic Repair Issue after October 2018 updates of Windows 10.

System booting to a crash screen

Error: WDF_Violation
 

Environment

  • Windows 10

Cause

Corrupt driver file

Resolution

Rename driver file, which will force Windows to recreate it during next restart:

  1. Click Troubleshoot
  2. Click Advanced Options
  3. Click Command Prompt
    Note:
    You may need to select an account to continue
  4. Type c:
  5. Press ENTER
  6. Type cd c:\Windows\system32\drivers
  7. Press ENTER
    Note: For steps 8 and 12, the files may not be there.  Still run the command
  8. Type ren HpqKbFiltr.sys HpqKbFiltr.sys.bak
  9. Press ENTER
  10. Type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers\wd\
  11. Press ENTER
  12. Type ren WDFilter.sys WDFilter.sys.bak
  13. Press ENTER
  14. Type exit
  15. Press ENTER

The system should restart.  You may need to restart it yourself.
