Ethernet Ports Not Working in Dorm Room

Ethernet ports automatically disable themselves when a router or splitter is detected.

Issue/Question

The ethernet ports in my dorm were working and now they are not

Dorm Ethernet port damaged

Environment

  • Dorm room

Cause

This can be due to the detection of an unauthorized network device being used such as a router or ethernet splitter. These devices are not allowed as per USD's Network Access Policy.  There could also be a new hardware related problem with your personal device or the port you are plugging in to.

Resolution

  1. Unplug the unauthorized device from the Ethernet ports
    • Hub
    • Router
    • Personal Access POint
  2. Contact the Service Desk with the following information 
    1. Which building and room
    2. The label on the port you are connecting to
      • standard wall port or one of the wall based Cisco 1815 APs
    3. Media Access Control (MAC) Address of the wired network adapter
