USD Tutoring

USD trains peer educators, like tutors and Supplemental Instruction Leaders, for them to offer free academic coaching and tutoring in a variety of subjects through the Academic Advising & Success Center.

Requesting a Tutor

• USD offers face to face tutoring in Vermillion during the fall and spring semester for most undergraduate classes.
• Summer tutoring and tutoring for some graduate classes are only available online through Tutor.com, accessible through any D2L course under USD Resources.
• Tutoring generally will become available the second full week of the semester. 
• Tutoring is scheduled in person only in small groups (4-5 people).
• For one on one help, please try options through Tutor.com below or visit your faculty’s office hours.
• Students needing a tutor through the Academic Advising & Success Center.
  1. Go to Coyote Connections
  2. Click the blue Get Assistance tab
  3. Or, in Navigate 360 app (also referred to as Coyote Connections)
  4. Select Appointments
     Note: Coyote Connections will not allow students to sign up for a tutoring time that will fall within 24 hours of the time of request, nor for a date further ahead than two weeks’ out.
  5. Under the What can we help you find? dropdown menu, select Tutoring 
  6. For tutoring location, select Academic Advising & Success Center for face to face tutoring
     Note: this is for the majority of courses
  7. A limited number of courses have virtual tutoring via Zoom
  8. To access virtual tutoring, select Virtual as your location

  9. Pick the course for which you need tutoring
  10. Select an appointment that fits your schedule
      Note: This automatically is a one-time appointment; speak with your tutor if you want to set it up to be weekly instead. You may tutor once a week for each course; if you need more tutoring, please check tutor.com from the D2L help menu, or email tutorsi@usd.edu
  11. If the undergraduate USD course you need tutoring for is not listed on the drop-down, please email tutorsi@usd.edu with details.
      Note: The Academic Advising & Success Center does not tutor any Business, Physics, or Computer Science courses. You can find tutoring for those courses in the information below.
• Please note our USD tutors have been hired based upon their knowledge in a particular discipline or department, not just for specific classes. Therefore, your tutor may not currently be in the class you are taking or has only taken a higher-level version of the course, but is qualified and will be happy to help you in the area you request. They may take a couple of minutes to reorient themselves to the material in your session; this is to be expected.
• Cancellation and No-Show Policy:
  • Student learners get two misses.
  • Those who fail to attend scheduled tutoring appointments, or who cancel their appointments within two hours of the set tutoring time (or without good cause as determined by AASC staff), will have their tutoring appointments canceled for the remainder of the semester.

• Tutor.com Online Tutoring:
  • USD students have free access to online tutors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through Tutor.com
  • Students can access the service through the USD Resources dropdown on any USD D2L course 
  • Tutor.com has support for over 250 subjects (in English and Spanish)
  • Tutoring sessions are recorded so students can go back and review them for additional help
  • Other academic support is offered through tutor.com, including sessions on study strategies and learning

• Tutoring for Business School Courses:
  • Free tutoring is available for several business courses, particularly core classes that have expressed a need for extra tutoring.
  • We have tutors for Accounting and Economics Principles, Business Stats 1 and 2, College Algebra, Survey of Calculus and a few other courses.

• Tutoring for Physics Courses (PHYS): 
  • Students should access their faculty and recitation sections for Physics assistance, or use tutor.com.
  • There is limited in person tutoring available for PHYS 185 & 187 (Astronomy courses).
  • These courses can also be supported under the earth science section of tutor.com.
• Tutoring for TRIO Students: 
  • TRIO Student Support Services provides tutoring for their students for Math (up through 115 Pre-Calc), Biology (up through 153), and Chemistry (up through 114), as well as facilitating tutoring for other courses.
  • TRIO students can work with their TRIO advisor to sign up for tutoring for other courses and should email triosss@usd.edu for assistance.
• USD Nursing Tutoring: 
  • In addition to the NURS tutoring available on Coyote Connections, Tutor.com has tutoring for Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Basic & Advanced Nursing, NCLEX Test Prep, and other Nursing topics. 
• USD - Sioux Falls: 
  • Students attending in Sioux Falls have a variety of support options to help them be successful in their courses.
  • Visit USD-Sioux Falls Student Support & Resources to learn more and be connected to an academic advisor, mentor, tutor or other resources!

Study Buddies Option

You can also connect with classmates to create study groups via the Navigate360 Coyote Connections app, which has a feature called Study Buddies.  You can use this feature to meet and study together outside of class. Here’s how:

• Access the Coyote Connections (Navigate 360 Student) app (download it here: https://www.usd.edu/Student-Life/Academic-and-Campus-Support/USD-Apps).
• Click Study Buddies.
• Select the courses where you want to connect with your classmates.
• Select your classmates. If others in the class have opted in, you will see their contact information. Email them, automated email will pop up for you to reach out and connect.
• Find a time to meet together and work on learning course content.
