Resolution

When a supervisor or hiring manager is going to be hiring temporary or student employees, there are questions they should ask to ensure that they do not inadvertently trigger ACA benefits, which are an additional cost to the department.  Below are questions that hiring managers should ask prior to making a hire:

  • Have you worked at USD in the past year? If so, where and how many hours?
  • Have you worked at any other South Dakota Board of Regents institutions (SDSU, NSU, DSU, SDSMT, BHSU, RIS, Enrollment Services Center, or BOR) in the past year? If so, where and approximately how many hours?
  • Did you retire or voluntarily term from a position where you received health benefits in the past 6 months?
  • Are you looking for other jobs at this time? If so, how many hours will you be working?
  • What are your future employment plans with any BOR institutions in the next year?

If there is concern regarding potential ACA eligibility, please reach out to the Human Resources office.  HR will be able to confirm ACA eligibility before an offer is made.
