Answer

Fire Evacuation Plan

Any staff on the 2nd floor – meet in the staff office suite, by the double doors.
Any staff on the 1st floor or in the Basement – meet at the front desk.

 On 2nd Floor, Designate Incident Commander following this order:

  • Director
  • Deputy Directors
  • Conservator
  • Collection Manager
  • Curator

Incident Commander

  1. Use hand signals to designate three people to sweep the building.
    • Sweeper #0 - Sweep BASEMENT. Exit through north door. Monitor both NORTH doors.
    •  Sweeper #1 - Sweep FIRST floor. Exit through front door. Monitor FRONT door.
    •  Sweeper #2 - Sweep SECOND floor. Exit through east door. Monitor EAST door.
  2. Take gallery keys from lockbox – Keyset #4.
  3.  Go to front desk, check with Front Desk Personnel.
  4. After you hear from sweepers, exit through front door. Update NMM staff via emergency group text, UPD and other first responders, confirming everyone is out of the building.
  5. Proceed to evacuation assembly point, or as needed.

Sweepers

  1.  Sweep public/non-public spaces, including restrooms and stairwells, directing people to the nearest exit.
  2.  If a door is closed, do not enter; if a door is open, check for occupants.
  3. Close (but do not lock) doors to aid in isolating the spread of fire.
  4. Upon exiting building, make sure the door is closed.
  5. Update Incident Commander via emergency group text, indicating any use of refuge points.
  6. Monitor door, directing people to the evacuation assembly point.
  7. When notified by Incident Commander, proceed to the evacuation assembly point. 

Front Desk Personnel

  1. Remain at front desk to account for visitors in building, sending them to evacuation assembly point.
  2. Direct any part-time staff/students to accompany visitors to the evacuation assembly point.
  3. Confer with Incident Commander before exiting through front doors.
  4. Monitor front door until relieved by sweeper, then proceed to the evacuation assembly point.

Disabled Persons

  1. In the event of a fire, elevators will be automatically deactivated.
  2. Escort any disabled persons to the established refuge points, as safe and appropriate.
    • East stairwell – second floor or basement
    • West (Lobby) stairwell – second floor
  3. If available, use emergency call button to contact the University Police Department.
  4. Inform disabled persons that help is on the way; do not remain with them.
  5. Update Incident Commander via emergency group text, indicating any use of refuge points.

Tour Guides

  1. Exit building to the evacuation assembly point, using nearest egress.
  2. Account for the number of people in your group.
  3. Update Incident Commander via emergency group text, indicating any use of refuge points.

Working with Emergency Personnel (Incident Commander or Designee)

  1. Update them about building evacuation status, including any use of refuge points.
  2. Inform them of specific exhibition or storage areas with irreplaceable or fragile collections, in hopes of limiting water and smoke damage by any means necessary.
  3. Keep a sharp lookout for how smoke is affected by prevailing wind patterns and be prepared to move evacuees upwind and/or notify building occupants downwind should smoke from a chemical fire travel towards a building.
  4. Until the all-clear is reported, DO NOT RE-ENTER the building for any reason.

WEEKEND RESPONSE

Any staff at the front desk, briefly assemble.  Other staff, proceed to plan.

Incident Commander

  1. Take gallery keys from lockbox – Keyset #4
  2. Direct additional front desk staff member to sweep FIRST floor.
  3. Remain at front desk to account for visitors in building, sending them to evacuation assembly point.
  4. Wait to confirm initial sweep of BASEMENT/SECOND floor in person, directing them to sweep other floor.
  5. After you hear from both sweepers, exit through FRONT door. Update NMM staff via emergency group text, UPD and other first responders, confirming everyone is out of the building.
  6. Proceed to evacuation assembly point, or as needed.

Sweeper – FIRST Floor

  1. Sweep public/non-public spaces, including restrooms and stairwells, directing people to the nearest exit.
  2. If a door is closed, do not enter; if a door is open, check for occupants.
  3. Close (but do not lock) doors to aid in isolating the spread of fire.
  4. Exit through FRONT door, escorting any people to the evacuation assembly point.
  5. Update Incident Commander, use emergency group text, as necessary.
  6. Proceed to evacuation assembly point, monitoring north and east doors.

Sweeper – BASEMENT and SECOND Floor

  1. Check the floor you’re on first, either BASEMENT or SECOND.
  2. Sweep public/non-public spaces, including restrooms and stairwells, directing people to the nearest exit.
  3. If a door is closed, do not enter; if a door is open, check for occupants.
  4. Close (but do not lock) doors to aid in isolating the spread of fire.
  5. Go to front desk, check with Incident Commander.
  6. Check the other floor, either BASEMENT or SECOND, following the same procedure.
  7. Exit through FRONT door, update Incident Commander, indicating any use of refuge points.
  8. Monitor door until notified by Incident Commander, then proceed to the evacuation assembly point.
