International Outlets Safety Question

Summary

Japan does not have 3 prong outlets, an adapter will be needed for this type of connection

Body

Issue/Question

I will be traveling to Japan in a couple of weeks. I have read that there should be no issues plugging devices into outlets in Japan, although I might need an adaptor to convert 3-prong to 2-prong

Environment

  • Power Outlets

Cause

Traveling to Japan

Resolution

  1. Japanese and US power plugs are largely compatible, especially if the US plug doesn't have a ground prong
  2. If your US plug has three prongs (Type B, including a grounding prong), you'll need a travel adapter to use it in Japan. Japanese outlets typically don't have a grounding socket
