  • What is my building's evacuation plan?
  • What is the severe weather plan for Arts and Sciences?

Answer

Evacuation Plan

In the event that the Arts & Sciences (A&S) building must be evacuated, the following procedures shall be followed:

  1. Upon activation of the fire alarm, all persons in A&S will immediately begin exiting through the nearest available exit route
  2. Elevators should NOT be used during an evacuation event unless necessary for the evacuation of a disabled/handicapped person
  3. Note: If a handicapped/disabled person is in the building they need to have assigned personnel assist them in an emergency.
  4. Designated persons from each floor will quickly survey the floor to assure that the evacuation is in progress by knocking on doors and informing remaining persons of need to evacuate.  The following persons have been designated:
    • Lower Level                 - Program Assistant I
    • 1st Floor                      - Program Assistant I
    • 2nd Floor                      - Program Assistant II
  5. All persons in A&S will assemble on the south side of Old Main. This will allow quick assessment for any missing persons and avoid interference with emergency responders.
  6. In the event of weather conditions where shelter is desired, please move away from Old Main and go inside Aalfs Auditorium
  7. All persons shall remain in the assembly area until released by the AHJ.

Severe Weather Plan

In the event of severe weather alerts such as tornado or severe thunderstorm, persons in A&S should immediately proceed to the lower level main hallway using the fastest route available.

  1. Designated persons from each floor will quickly survey the floor to assure that evacuation is in progress or has been completed.  The following staff have been designated:
    • Lower Level                 - Program Assistant I
    • 1st Floor                      - Program Assistant I
    • 2nd Floor                      - Program Assistant II
  1. The lower level main hallway near the doorways to adjoining buildings is the safe area and should be large enough to accommodate all building occupants.
  2. All persons are asked to remain in the safe area until released.

Arts & Sciences and McKusick are supervised by the same fire alarm system, therefore, if McKusick is evacuated this plan should be activated.
