Question

How do I add a caption to pictures in Word?

Answer

To add a caption to an image:

  1. Right click on the image and select Insert Caption
  2. The Insert Caption dialogue box appears. In the top text box, type the caption you want to appear with the figure.
  3. If you want to hide the label (for example, ‘Figure’), click the Exclude label from the caption checkbox.
  4. If you want to change the way in which the captions are numbered, click the Numbering button and select your choice.
  5. Click OK to save the caption settings and return to the document. The caption is displayed in a color, font, size, and style that is controlled by the Theme selected for your document.

If you change the theme, the captions will be adjusted automatically. If you prefer to change the format of the captions, you can do so by clicking the Home tab and choosing new settings from your choices in the Font group. Remember, however, that once you change the captions from a theme-supported style, you'll have to reformat them automatically if you ever apply a new theme.
