How do I view a PDF file that was marked as protected or encrypted?

Cause

Sensitive or Restricted data can be protected by applying Microsoft Sensitivity Labels to PDF documents.  Data Stewards at USD may opt to secure privileged data in this way.  

Resolution

  1. If the secured PDF file has been shared with you online or via email, download it
    1. Right-Click the document to view the download option
    2. For multiple files select them all and right-click and download
      note: Opening the PDF document from the browser is not allowed, it must be downloaded
  2. Make sure you have installed the latest version of Azure Information Protection Viewer
  3. Open Azure Information Protection Viewer
  4. Sign-in with your USD account or your Microsoft Guest Account, if prompted
  5. Select Open and choose the protected PDF you want to view
    hint: you can open multiple Azure Information Viewers if you would like to view multiple PDFs at once.
