Local Printer Not Working

Environment

Cause

  • Multiple causes

Resolution

Verify USB cable is plugged in

  1. Check the connection on both the printer and computer ends of the cable
  2. Confirm printer has paper and paper tray is properly loaded
  3. Reboot Computer

Restart Printer

  1. Press power button on printer to shut down
  2. Unplug power cord from printer
  3. Press power button a couple of times
  4. Plug power cord in again
  5. Turn printer on

Restart Computer

Clear Local Print Queue

  1. Click
  2. Click
  3. Click Devices
  4. Click Printers & scanners
  5. Click entry for printer that is not printing
  6. Click Open queue
  7. Click Printer
  8. Click Cancel All Documents

Install drivers

  1. Go to support.hp.com
  2. Click Software and Drivers
  3. Click Printer
  4. Enter Printer Model (ex HP 2420)
  5. Click Download to right of recommended or desired driver
  6. Double click downloaded file 
  7. Follow prompts

Reload USB device

  1. Right click
  2. Click Device Manager
  3. Click USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
  4. Press Delete
  5. Click Uninstall
  6. Restart computer

Replace Toner Cartridge

  1. Remove toner cartridge
  2. Check for obstructions
  3. Insert new toner cartridge
