External Display Goes Black When Trying to Draw

When trying to draw or write in a Microsoft application such as Word or PowerPoint the monitor will blank out for a few seconds, go completely black or the computer may reboot itself.

Issue/Question

The monitor display goes black when trying to draw or write in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or Whiteboard app

The monitor has gone black and I can't get it to display again

In Edit Mode of Office apps the pen will start to draw and the screen will blank out for a few seconds

Environment

  • Windows 10 Version 2004
  • Smart Classroom
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Microsoft Whiteboard

Cause

A known issue confirmed by Microsoft

Resolution

  1. Use a different application such as Pen Notice, Sharp Pen Software, or SMART Notebook to annotate
    Note: The pen will work in Presentation mode of PowerPoint
    Note: If unable to view anything on the PC monitor, use the projector screen to navigate
  2. Try putting the computer into Extended Mode by double-clicking the Extend Display icon on the desktop
  3. Log out of the computer using the projector screen as the display 
  4. Click OK on the USD Logon Policy page
  5. Click the Power button in the bottom right-hand corner
  6. Click Restart
  7. If you still need assistance, please contact the Service Desk with the following information
    1. Building name
    2. Room number
    3. A detailed description of the issue and provide any error messages if applicable
