Questions Regarding Chromebooks

Summary

Chromebooks can be used for USD courses but some courses may require software that is not available on the Chromebook

Body

Issue/Question

Will I be able to use a Chromebook for work at USD using the Google Apps?

Will Zoom work with a Chromebook?

Environment

  • Google Chromebooks

Cause

There are some limitations when doing distance learning especially when presenting and sharing your screen. They also do not multitask as effectively as Windows and Mac PC's. Chromebooks do not support some of the testing applications and may not meet the requirements for proctored exams and are therefore not recommended at this time.

Resolution

  1. You can use a Chromebook at USD but some software may not be available for the Chrome Operating System (OS)
Note: You can use the Library computers or checkout a computer from the ITS Service Desk if needed. These are available on a First Come First Served basis
  2. You can use Zoom by following these instructions
  3. See instructions for accessing Microsoft Office on a Chromebook
  4. Please contact the instructor(s) of your course(s) to see if you need a Windows or Mac computer

Note: ITS provides limited on-site support for Chromebooks and the Chrome OS, to include connecting to the USD wireless network (eduroam), web access of Office 365, and Zoom web conferencing.  Some software may not work on Chromebooks. Printing to Pharos printers from a Chromebook is not supported and does not work.
